Good Morning, We have our. youngest grandsons with us this week.  Camp Grandma is going well, but they are a handful.  Today is Election Day, get out and vote.  I opened the church at 5:00, when the polls opened at 6:00 we had a great turnout to start the day.  I am planning a really fun surprise for this Sunday as we close the book on Ephesians, be sure and connect with us.  MDO day today so along with elections it will be a very busy day!  Get out and enjoy God's blessings! We sometimes don't know because we don't ask.  When you want to know something do you ask God?  More importantly are you waiting for an answer.  I think often times we ask and if the answer isn't immediate we assume there is no answer.  A part of the equation is to wait upon the Lord.  Call to Him and He will answer you.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, Welcome to August!  We will be going back to school, ramping up fall activities, and continuing to be busy.  We have Renee and Hannah back this week which is nice.  Shaun is out for jury duty and so it seems there is always something.  We have the iPad Kiosk in the lobby.  We will talk more about those as August unfolds.  We are striving to deepen our connection with people and thus hope to deepen their faith connection.  A cooler morning this morning which was nice.  It will however warm up today.  Get out and enjoy! The Lord looks at our heart.  We too should be focused on one another's heart.  Our culture is very centered on appearance, we all know things like "don't judge a book by its cover", but still we do it.  The interesting thing about culture is the standard of beauty is constantly changing.  The heart desired by God is never changing.  I hope we can spend more attention on things that matter.  May we have the heart of God.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, We say goodbye to July today.  Carol and the little boys are headed to St. Joseph this morning.  It will be a wild week.   I know Carol has so many plans for them including Chiefs Camp.  That of course calls for a trip to Rally House for gear.  What a little storm.  I got busy picking up limbs and didn't check the rain gauge.  It did deter me from running this morning.  I will try to get it in sometime this weekend.  I did get the yard mowed last night.  My lawn mowing person will be a bit too busy to mow. Good Morning, July is winding down.  August of course means back to school.  It is coming.  Today was a walk day, wished it was a run day the weather was much nicer.  Carol and the littles will be in St. Joseph tomorrow.  I will be glad to have her home and we will enjoy the boys.  My mom is back at her and dad's apartment and our prayer is for stability.  Several meetings today so hoping it is quiet around here.  The rain is coming get out early and have a great day!   Blessings, Doug

I was reading this morning interesting insights into faith.   It said the sermon isn't the focal point of a church anymore.  Technology has placed great preaching at the tip of our fingers.  It said what people long for the church to provide is community.  We hope at Ashland to provide Christian Community.  This fall during MidWeek@Ashland we launch a Pilot Program with community in mind.  We will have a meal, but then we will focus on building community.  I hope you will make Wednesday evening a part of your faith journey as we embrace big the light of the world.   Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, The day is still warm, but cooler temperatures are coming.  I was out and got a short 4 miles in this morning.  Carol is with the littles in CoMo.  She will bring two of them home.  I fear she will be exhausted before our week with them in St. Joseph begins.  She has so many fun plans for Camp Grandma.  Today we are off to Chiefs Camp to see our next Super Bowl Champs practice.  The time is ticking on the guys being in St. Joseph.  Have a great day!   Blessings, Doug

Good Morning, A day in Missouri can bring great change.  Today we have drizzle and indications the heat will break. Carol left this morning for CoMo to watch kids.  She will bring the two littlest home with her, but not sure when she comes back.  It depends on how long the parents can endure the separation.   We shall see.  I am counting the days until Renee and Hannah return to the office.  They deserve some time, but it changes the day for sure.  I have a meeting downtown this morning so some time out of the office.  This is MDO day so lots of people buzzing around Ashland.  I hope you enjoy this day! Goals matter.  We need something to work toward.  Goals make us focus and keep us moving in a positive direction.  We should have goals in our faith.  They need to be specific and we need a plan to attain them.  I am working on our fall discipleship series and I am reminded that we get where we plan to go.  No plan, no goal and we remain in the same place.  May be press on toward the goal to win the prize which God has called us to attain. Good Morning, This morning feels like summer in Missouri, hot and humid!  We walked this morning, there are better days to run coming this week.  We had a busy weekend with theater, yard work, and of course church.  My mom is scheduled to return to the Princeton today.  I am praying for a smooth transition back to her apartment.  We launched the Produce Table Sunday and it was met with great success.  Lots of produce brought in and all the produce went home with someone.  We also introduced the new Lobby area outside the sanctuary where we moved the Connect Center.  We are trying to make connection and retention of folks easier.  There will be more exciting news to come.  Today my friends stay in the A/C if you can, it will be a very hot day.  Stay in and count your blessings. I love the running metaphors.  Being a runner I know that it isn't always easy, but worth it.  I also consider a good run a run I finish.  There are no style points and faster isn't always better.  The key is always to run with perseverance.  The faith is like a race and requires our focus and our persisitance.  Run well my friends.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, Friday has arrived and brought us some rain.  We stayed in the morning so no Parkway.  A little update on my mom.  She can return to the Princeton conditionally.  She must have assistance any time she gets up.  This will have to be staff and not my dad.  Her compliance will determine if she stays.  Pray she is compliant or we will have to move her.  Tonight we are off to see Willy Wonka Jr. at RRT.  I know the kids are excited, it will be fun.  I hope you connect with Ashland this weekend! David gives us some common sense advice.  This falls in line with one of my favorite sayings, "What goes around come around."  This is often offered when people do terrible things, but it is true of people who do good.  It follows one of my other sayings, "Truth always comes to the top, it comes to light."  Do good, do the right thing and goo will come of it. What is Jesus referring to when he talks about the Kingdom belonging to those like children?  What are children's most endearing qualities?  They are open and trusting.  They don't judge and have an inquisitive spirit.  Everyone is their friend and they find joy in small things.  Hmm.  We should all strive to have this outlook in life.  Just a thought for today!

Who do you say Jesus is?  This is a question we must answer.  If we follow Peter saying that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God it directs how we live.  We can't discount the teachings of Jesus and we can't try to simply set our own path if we believe He is the Messiah.  The way we answer the question makes all the difference in the world. I have chosen the way of faithfulness.  I find this a hard choice some days.  The Gospel can be challenging.  The challenge is you can't choose Jesus and not choose the Gospel.  We can't do what is best for us if it isn't best for everyone.  We can't sit on the sidelines while injustice surrounds us.  If we have influence we need to use it to benefit those less fortunate.  This can cause discomfort in our circle of influence, but that is exactly the message of Jesus.  Choose faithfulness to Him, it comes with the inheritance. Good Morning, What a warm start to the week.  I got 3 miles in this morning, but it was hot.  Carol is walking for a while to rehab a sore knee, so we start together, I run, then we finish together walking home.  New G got off on Saturday and they took Renee with them, so the office will be short staffed for a couple of weeks.  We will do our best to make sure all your needs are met.  The garden is producing, Carol has done a wonderful job with the garden she wasn't going to plant.  It will be dangerously hot today, so get out early, stay hydrated and be careful.  Enjoy God's blessings, your inheritance today! Good Morning, Happy Friday!  I started out the day with a 5 mile run.  It was hot, humid, and just a tough run.  The up side is I am shedding some weight.  Tomorrow New G leaves from Ashland for tour.  The excitement in the air is palatable.  Tom and kids are back and hopefully getting some rest.  Ask them about camp on Sunday, it was a great week for them.  We have a BD to celebrate at Ashland this week, Ms Barb Bielby will be celebrating at Ashland a very special Birthday.  This Sunday we kick off the School Supply Drive, the bins are at the doors and we have school supply lists if you need some help with what items are needed.  Have a great weekend and as always connect with Ashland. Faith is not something to take pride in, nor is it something to be ashamed of.  The Gospel is "good news", it is a description of life in the Kingdom. Jesus lived it out and demonstrated what it looks like to live the life God desires for us.  We need to not only read the Gospel but to live the Gospel.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, It seems to me this week is flying by.  The Parkway was quiet this morning for some reason.  It was a beautiful morning.  The garden is producing.  We have cucumbers and small tomatoes.  The herbs and peppers are thriving.  Carol has done a wonderful job with keeping it looking good.  The kids returned from camp, I don't know who is the most exhausted.  I hope you enjoy this wonderful day! We humans are an interesting lot.  We clearly learn best by example.  Jesus is that example.  Yes, he did teach and helped clarify God's word, however the most helpful teaching was with his life.  The Gospels tell of Jesus teaching, but more importantly they illustrate his life.  The way we live into the fullness it to live into the example.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, We have reached the middle of July, time is flying by.  We went to the movies last night and saw Young Washington.  It is a great movie!  I ran 3 1/4 this morning at my best pace since surgery.  It is slow but I am getting there.  I have an extraction this morning, we shall see how that goes.  I encourage you to listen today for the still small voice of God as you get out and enjoy this beautiful  day! What is moral filth?  I think we should consider what James means by this.  Moral filth is more than lust and pornography.  Moral filth is hate and prejudice.  Moral filth is choosing not to follow Christ, but appealing to the pleasures of the culture.  James wants us to accept and live out what Jesus did and what Jesus taught.  This is the way we change our life and the world around us.  Just a thought for today!

Today's Thought

When my kids were little we had volunteer pumpkins grow along our driveway.  The plants put out runners and they wanted to come out onto the drive itself.  We would be careful to pull them back to the soil so they could find another root.  Eventually one escaped and was fun over by the car.  The vine lost connection with the real roots and died.  I use this as an example of what happens if we don't remain connected to God.  Keeping God commands keeps us connected to God. We remain in his love and maintain a connection with Him.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, A rainy morning in St Joseph.  I woke at 5, heard the rain, cleared my alarm and went back to sleep.  I love to sleep with the sound of rain.  The Youth had a wonderful night at the Trampoline Park and they leave Saturday morning for camp.  Saturday at Ashland will be very busy.  We have a funeral, a BD Party, and the kids leave for camp.  A blessing in all instances, but it keeps us hopping.  It should be a little cooler today, so take advantage and get out and about after the rain.  Enjoy the day! Paul appreciates God being at work through Jesus Christ in his life and notes that this happens through all generations.  God wants to work in everyone's life. He is clear that this work happens by the power of His Spirit that is within us.  We are talking about being Marked in this sermon series at Ashland and being Marked means we welcome God into our life.  If we want the power of Jesus Christ we must welcome it.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, I hit the Parkway alone this morning, Carol is resting the knee.  I got a 5K in as I continue to prepare for the St. Joseph Marathon.  ( My plan is the 1/2). My mom seems to be improving and appreciates all the prayers.  Tuesday was Water Day at MDO, the St. Joseph Fire Department brought a truck and supplied the water spray. The kids had a wonderful time.  Don Mahaffy's funeral will be at Ashland Saturday at 1:00 pm.  We are making preparations for a celebration of his life.  It is to be another really hot day so be careful and stay hydrated.  Enjoy the day! Good Morning, It is a lovely morning.  The Parkway was a nice way to start the day.  Thank you for the prayers for my mother.  We visited yesterday and she is better.  It appears dehydration has contributed to weakness and balance issues.  A few days in the hospital and then a stint is rehabilitation hopefully does the trick.  We lost a great one yesterday.  Don Mahaffy went home to be with the Lord Monday.  I will share details as they are available.  Tom and the crew are getting prepped to leave for camp Saturday morning.  What an opportunity for our young  folks to deepen their connection with God. It will be hot again today so get out early and take in some summer.  Enjoy this beautiful day! Blessings, Doug

Monday we heard from Matthew of how valuable God's word is to our life.  Today we hear from David that the word of God is perfect.  We are made perfect through Jesus who is the living word.  The living word is perfect and we are to follow in the perfection of God's word.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, I hope you had a great weekend and a wonderful 4th of July celebration.  Carol and I stayed close to home and caught up from the trip to Hawaii.  We had plenty of things to do around the house and yard.  We did make a quick trip out for dinner and got back to our pizza routine on Sunday.  I got a call from my sister last night that mom was admitted to the hospital last night.  They don't know what the problem is, but overall weakness and some disorientation.  Looks like a trip to KC this afternoon to see what's going on.  I would appreciate your prayers.  Ashland is in recovery mode from VBS and Tom is prepping for camp with the Youth Group.  Enjoy this beautiful day! Good Morning, Thank you for all the Birthday greetings yesterday.  The kids sang Happy Birthday at the closing of VBS.  The staff brought donuts and wished my Happy Birthday.  It was a very nice way to celebrate.  Carol and I are going out tonight to celebrate both my Birthday and our Anniversary.  VBS is in the books and it was a great year thanks to such wonderful support and volunteer excitement.  It was an outstanding time!  Tonight we say our goodbyes to Jenny Raines in the Fellowship Hall from 5:00 to 7:00.  She will be missed.  We said goodbye to Leonard Williams yesterday. This verse needs repeated by each of us everyday.  We live in a society that promotes self promotion.  We learn to brag at an early age and we see it promoted in social media.  We have leaders that want to self-promote rather than lead by example.  It is time for us to give sober judgment to ourselves and give God the glory.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning, The heat continues.  Carol tweaked her knee and decided to rest it this morning.  I got 3 miles in running and it was really hot.  I am glad for some breeze.  We had a wonderful night at VBS.  Great kids and great volunteers make for a great experience.  Today is the last day of June which marks the halfway point of 2026.  We have had some awesome things happen thus far but the best part of 2026 is yet to come.  No VBS tonight and then back tomorrow to wrap it up.  Be careful out there today, hydrate and be heat aware.  Have a great day! We serve one King and one master, Jesus Christ.  I want us to consider what it means to serve our king and master.  Jesus wants us to be attentive to Kingdom principles, not earthly principles.  Power in the Kingdom is expressed by love and grace.  How can you serve your King today?  Just a thought for today!
