Good Morning,
Today is Good Friday.  Have you ever wondered why we call it Good Friday. Good Friday gets its name from an older sense of the word "good" that meant holy or sacred — the same way people once used phrases like "the good book" to refer to the Bible. So "Good Friday" essentially means "Holy Friday," marking it as a solemn, sacred day in the Christian calendar. It commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, which Christians believe was an act of ultimate sacrifice that opened the way for humanity's redemption.  We had a nice turnout for Maundy Thursday Prayer and Come and Go Communion.  Tonight is our Good Friday or Holy Friday Service at 6:00 pm.  I believe it will enhance your Easter experience to be here.  Easter is Sunday and it will be a glorious day.  We have family and old friends coming I hope you will join us at Ashland. This is a day to fix our eyes on Jesus.  Today will be a day in the life of Jesus filled with challenge and pain.  We must walk along and endure what He endures for on Easter we enjoy the glory He enjoys.  May this Easter weekend fill your heart with the love and grace of Jesus.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
Today is Maundy Thursday. It is a wet and chilly day in St Joseph yielding about an inch and a half of rain so far. The Sanctuary at Ashland is open all day for prayer and you are invited for Communion from 6:00 to 7:00, this is come and go.  Tomorrow is Good Friday and we will have service at 6:00 pm.  I hope you will join us as we prepare for Easter.  We received good news yesterday, Jess and family will arrive tomorrow.  It will be fun to have them with us for Easter.  Mark and Winja and Emma leave for Germany today to join Winja's family.  Please join with me in prayers for safe travel and a wonderful trip.  My friends Easter is coming.  Enjoy a beautiful rainy day today!

Today's Thought

This is an important message in the narrative.  Jesus foretold what was to happen.  What did the disciples think would happen?  Did they not hear or ignore Jesus?  He told them of the coming doom and of the coming promise.  I hope today we can grasp what Jesus said.  Never loose heart, Jesus is alive!  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
We enter a new month today.  The rain is wonderful, we had 3/4 of an inch so far with another inch expected today.  I was able to get sticks and branches to the garden in hopes of burning this month.  We are excited to have kids coming for Easter, not all, but we will take what we can get and be thankful.  Tonight is usher and greeter training, you should have received an invite from Hannah.  Tomorrow the church will open at 7:00am and be open until 7:00 pm.  I will be serving Communion from 6:00 to 7:00 in the evening.  Good Friday Service will be at 6:00, I hope you can make it. Enjoy a beautiful rainy day today!

How sad for the fool.  David recognizes that those who say there is no God are corrupt and their deeds are vile.  I would add that this goes to those that claim God but act like there is no God.  Belief is an action word, belief is how lived out in our daily lives.   Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
It is another wonderful day.  We hit the Parkway early and I was able to run about 1.5 miles.  It is difficult to take this slow, I am thankful Carol helps me take time in recovery.  We spent time last night clearing garden beds of leaves and cutting oak trees out of the hedges.  I am thankful we can burn in April, I have a lot of stuff to burn.  It looks like rain is coming and it will be welcomed.  Holy Week moves forward, Easter is coming, but Good Friday stands in our path.  May the grace and love of God be with you.  Get out and enjoy a beautiful day today!

Think about the fact that the death of Jesus was the death we deserved.   Jesus placed in our place that we might have eternal life.  I am thankful for what Jesus did and find it hard to imagine that God loves me that much.  I can only rejoice and give me life to his service.  Just a thought for today!

Subject: Palm Sunday Reflection: The Power of Servanthood

Dear Friends,

I hope this message finds you well as we journey through this Holy Week together.

This Palm Sunday, we explored a powerful tension that existed as Jesus entered Jerusalem—a tension that still challenges us today. While the crowds expected a militant king who would restore Israel through force, Jesus came offering a radically different kind of power: the power of sacrifice and servanthood. On one side of the city, Jesus entered humbly, and on the other, Pilate arrived representing earthly power. These two arrivals represent the choice we still face: will we seek worldly power or embrace Christ's call to servant ministry?

Summary: The sermon explored the true meaning of following Christ through the door of grace, particularly through the lens of Matthew 25:31-40 (The Sheep and the Goats). Rather than earning our way into God's kingdom through good works, we discover that walking through the door with Jesus transforms us—opening our eyes to see His face in the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned. Our service to others flows not from obligation, but as a natural response to the grace we've already received. We serve because we were first loved, and in loving "the least of these," we love Christ Himself.

Let us remember that we won't walk alone—Christ promises to come alongside us, sharing our burdens and giving us strength.

Good Morning,
Well the day is starting behind for me.  Carol and I hit the Parkway, had a good stretch of running and then back to the house to meet Duvall's at 8:00.  They were 50 minutes behind, so I am 50 minutes behind.  I am glad to get the irrigation going, it will inspire some rain.  Holy Week is here.  I look forward to this week and also find it hard.  I go on an emotional roller coaster with all that happens.  I say and I believe, we can't really appreciate the resurrection without the crucifixion.  We have a great week planned at Ashland, I hope you will engage with our experiences.  Get out and enjoy a beautiful day today!

Isaiah proclaimed what was to come as God reached out to restore us.  I am sure it was hard for people to imagine, we know the story and it is hard to comprehend.  This demonstrates God's love for us.  How do we show our love fore God? Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
Today is cool and blustery in St. Joseph.  March is a strange weather month, but spring is around the corner.  Carol and I went to dinner last night at 801 Chophouse in Kansas City for her birthday.  We had a wonderful meal and a fun evening.  The weekend is here and this is Palm Sunday weekend.  This is always such an impactful Sunday, the kids wave palm branches and we recall Jesus coming into Jerusalem for Holy Week. l I hope you will connect with at Ashland enjoy the weekend!

God is my mighty rock and my refuge.  I would assume everyone reading this has had some difficult times in their life.  I would also assume if you are reading this that faith has a place in your life or you are looking for faith.  This verse has been something that has held my fast in challenging times.  God is there, ask for God's help.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
It is another wonderful morning.  It is warm and proves to be a better day than yesterday.  We are celebrating Carol's BD with dinner in KC tonight.  Last week we were simply too busy to get her BD dinner in the mix.  Don't forget Palm Sunday is this Sunday.  The Palm Branches are ordered and ready for our kids to wave them Sunday.  It will be a great weekend.  I hope you enjoy the warmth and have a nice day!

I have found too many Christians want to lean into this verse thinking it is happening to us in the country.  My friends nothing could be further from the truth.  There are people around the globe that do indeed suffer for their faith, but harsh words hardly qualify and I personally have never been criticized for my faith by non-Christians.  I have found my harshness from judgmental Christians. Pray for those around the world that do indeed suffer for their faith in Jesus and give thanks that we do not.  Just a thought for today!

What a lovely morning!  We are headed to the 90's today, which is crazy!  Carol and were talking about all the damage our bushes and plants sustained with the last freeze.  We hope they can recover even if they don't bloom.  The Parkway was wonderful this morning and so many people were out and about.  Tonight is the last MidWeek@Ashland of the semester and the men are grilling. Good Morning,
A nicer day out there.  It is still cool, but much better.  Carol and I got in several miles and ran about half of it.  Slowly but surely getting back at it.  I have a day of interviews for the District Committee on Ordained Ministry.  We start early and will end about 9:00 pm.  Tomorrow is the last MidWeek@Ashland for the semester.  We will have burgers and dogs, so come have dinner.  I am excited for Holy Week, I hope you plan to join us on Good Friday, it will be a wonderful Easter experience.  I hope you enjoy and have a nice day!

I hope this message finds you well as we continue our journey toward Easter. This past Sunday, we explored a powerful invitation from Jesus that challenges us to stop searching for satisfaction in all the wrong places and simply drink from the living water He offers.

Summary: The sermon explored Jesus's bold declaration at the Feast of Booths: "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink." Through the sobering story of Dave Buschow, who died of thirst just yards from water, we were reminded that many of us are spiritually thirsty while the source of living water remains within reach. Jesus doesn't just invite us to observe or be curious—He calls us to actively drink and be satisfied. This living water doesn't just quench our personal thirst; it flows through us to touch everyone around us. As we prepare for Palm Sunday and Holy Week, we're challenged to examine where we've been seeking satisfaction and to turn instead to the only well that truly satisfies.

Takeaways:

Identify your thirst. We're all searching for something—peace, purpose, belonging, or the perfect relationship. The question is: where are we trying to quench that thirst? Our jobs, achievements, relationships, and even church activities can never fully satisfy the deep longing in our souls.
The water is closer than you think. Like Dave in the desert, we often lack knowledge but not availability. Jesus stands with the door open, offering living water that flows continuously. We don't need to have it all figured out; we simply need to come and drink through prayer, Scripture, and authentic Christian community.
Living water flows through us. When we drink from Jesus, it doesn't just satisfy our own needs—it creates rivers of living water that flow from within us to others. This is the life of discipleship: receiving from Christ and pouring out to the world around us.
As we move into this final week before Palm Sunday, I encourage you to drink deeply this week. Spend intentional time in prayer and Scripture. Let the living water of Christ quench the thirst you've been trying to satisfy elsewhere.

Good Morning,
A very chilly Monday.  It is crazy that we had 93 degree weather on Saturday, but it is March in Missouri.  We are into the week before Holy Week with Palm Sunday coming this Sunday.  Trivia Night Friday night was great fun.  We then had Mark and family in on Saturday and of course worship and Eggstravaganza on Sunday.  I hope your weekend was fun!  I forget to mention we had a packed house on Sunday.  Say an extra prayer for Natalie this week as her baby is due.  Natalie is our piano player.  We are excited for her.  Stay warm and have a nice day!

Good Morning,
Thursday was a lovely day and Friday looks to exceed it.  I think Carol had a great BD, however this is very hectic week for her.  We did get lunch at TOMO but she was busy the rest of the day into the evening and is busy today with Trivia Night and tomorrow is PEO.  We have the blessing of Mark and family tomorrow, so lots going on.  I got my tractor out last night and hope to get it ready for the season.  It needs new blades and a new drive belt.  I think I will replace the deck wheels while I am at it.  Get out and enjoy this really warm weather it is wonderful.  We were out early and I ran more today that any day since January.  I still believe I will run a marathon again someday.  Don't forget to connect with Ashland this weekend.  Have a nice day!

Happy Birthday Carol Walter!  We started the day with a trip to the Parkway.  She has been running her years in miles on her birthday, but we decided to not do that today.  We have lunch planned at Tomo, but her real dinner is planned for next week.  Tonight she has PEO and her last meeting as President.  I think she is ready to pass the baton.  Are you ready for some really warm weather?  The next three days will be crazy warm for this time of year.  Get out and enjoy!   Have a nice day!

Good Morning,
Today is projected to be a return to warmer weather.  Carol and I were out this morning and it was nice.  We had to watch for some ice but by tomorrow that should be gone.  Today is MidWeek@Ashland and we are closing in on the end of the semester.  Today is also SonShine Story Time which means lots of kids at Ashland.  Have you noticed how many new families we have at Ashland?  I am excited about all the new faces, I hope you take time to greet them.  Get out and enjoy the warmth.   Have a nice day!

Good Morning,
Happy St. Patrick's Day, be sure and don your green.  Busy day today, I have two funerals.  I am always honored to be with families at such a vulnerable time.  It is cold, but St. Joseph is back on a normal schedule today.  The streets are great and much of the snow disappeared thanks to some sun, not that it was warm enough for melting.  It still looks like 80 degree weather by Friday.  My guess, the storms are coming.  I hope you stay warm today and feel the warmth of God.   Have a nice day!

Interesting that today's passage comes from the 23rd Psalm.  I will read this passage at both funerals today.  These are words of assurance and they are not simply for end of life, they are words for everyday.  Make the Lord your shepherd and you will lack for nothing for He is with you.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
Well this was a bit of surprise.  St. Joseph has a healthy snow and ice coverage this morning.  Schools are closed so the office is officially closed.  I am here and will be in and out as will the rest of the staff today.  If you have needs please leave a message on the church phone and we will get back to you as soon as we can.  Well Mezzo made the Big Dance, not sure they will last long, but time will tell.  I made significant progress on the room upstairs this weekend.  Carol was out of town Friday and Saturday so I worked.  Today, stay warm and be careful the streets are very slick.  Have a nice day!

Sunday we talked about putting on God's grace, God's righteousness to enter the Kingdom.  Today we hear that we should be clothed also with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  These are important attributes as followers of Jesus.  May we all dress well today.   Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
Happy Friday and today is Friday the 13th which is my daughter's favorite day.  She was engaged and married on a Friday the 13th.  It is warmer this morning which is wonderful.  It will get colder this weekend, but take what we can get.   Farm and City Breakfast this morning so I am getting this out early.  Carol is away for the weekend with a bestie and I am trying to get more done upstairs.  I made good progress last night, it simply takes time.  I hope you enjoy the day and connect with Ashland this weekend. .

It doesn't always seem like something good can come of a situation, but that is God's promise.  It doesn't mean somethings won't be tough or that they won't be painful.  It means that something good can come of it if we trust God in our life.  No matter the circumstance may we all love God and believe God will use whatever for good.   Just a thought for today!

It is chilly this morning, but warmer than. predicted.  We had a great MidWeek@Ashland last night.  The numbers were down, but for Spring Break they were great.  Carol is off to spend the weekend with a dear friend. Corruption is caused by evil desires.  That would of course make sense.  We see such corruption everyday and it is important to understand it as caused by evil desires.  What evil desires do we see being played out.  If we are not loving our neighbor we are expressing evil desires.   Just a thought for today!

Subject: Following Jesus: What Nets Are You Willing to Put Down?

Dear Church Family,

I hope this message finds you well as we continue our Lenten journey together. This week's sermon challenged us to consider what transformation truly requires when we accept Jesus' invitation to follow Him.

Summary: The sermon explored the call to discipleship through the lens of Jesus calling His first disciples by the Sea of Galilee. Using the powerful story of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier as a modern parallel, we examined what it means to walk through the open door of transformation that Jesus offers. The central question posed was simple yet profound: Do you want something different? If so, we must be willing to follow Jesus, see what He shows us, and allow Him to change us. True discipleship isn't a program or checklist—it's a relationship that transforms ordinary people into fishers of men.

Takeaways:

Jesus meets us where we are: Just as He called ordinary fishermen doing their everyday work, Jesus invites each of us—regardless of our background or perceived qualifications—to follow Him and become extraordinary through His transformation.
Transformation requires leaving something behind: When Jesus said "Come, follow me," the disciples had to put down their nets. We must honestly examine what we're holding onto—career concerns, family pressures, relationships, fear, or comfort—that might prevent us from fully following Jesus.
Discipleship is about relationship, not performance: Following Jesus isn't about completing religious tasks or programs. It's about walking with Him daily, watching how He lived, and allowing that relationship to shape how we engage with others and live our lives. Form follows function, but more importantly, following forms function.
As we move forward this Lenten season, I encourage you to reflect on what Jesus might be asking you to put down so you can more fully take up His invitation to follow. What would your life look like if you said yes to that deeper relationship?

Good Morning,
We are having a drizzly morning.  We really need to have some rain, it is very dry.  My shrubs are coming to life and the Lillies as well as the Tulips are waking up.  Tonight we have MidWeek@Ashland. I understand this is Spring Break for our schools, but we will still be together.  Dinner is at 5:00 and it is going to be really tasty.  I ran yesterday and have no pain, so hoping it will only improve.  Thanks for your prayers.

God has loved us from the beginning.  We were created in His image.  This season of Lent leading up to Easter is all about how much God loves us.  We lean into the Greatest Commandment because of this great love God has for us.  Let us love God with all we are and love our neighbor as ourself.  That is how we thank God for loving us first.  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
It is another wonderful day in St. Joseph.  Carol and I had dinner on the patio and watched a little television.  It is wonderful to see spring and summer coming.  MDO is on break following the calendar of our school district. How do we share our faith?  This is a valid question.  The life we live is an invitation, but we have to have an answer when people ask about our life?  How do we smile through challenge?  The answer will shape how Christ is understood.  I hope we can each think about how we answer questions about our faith?  Just a thought for today!

Good Morning,
I hope you enjoyed the weekend!  We had a busy weekend spend with family, friends, and entertainment.  Annie was outstanding, such talent in our community.  The time change had little impact on worship attendance.  We had a great morning together.  I made substantial progress in our project upstairs.  I am close to putting up headboard which will really make it start to look like the final product.  It is to be a warm and wonderful day, get out and enjoy!

Good Morning,
We finally have some measurable rain! Carol uncovered some flowers from the leaves and they looked thrilled with light and moisture this morning.  We passed on the Parkway this morning, but it is the Rotary Dinner at Ashland, I am sure I will get some steps in.  Don't forget tonight, come eat spaghetti at Ashland, support the many Rotary causes where the money is invested.  Big weekend on tap!  Mark and his family are coming Saturday, Annie on Sunday and of course great worship on Sunday morning.  I hope to get a little work done on the room upstairs in between events.  Get out and enjoy the day and of course connect with Ashland this weekend!

The saying is "God is Good all the time!  All the time God is Good!" and we know it is true.  What do we do that expresses our belief in that?  Isaiah begins with praise, always a good place to start. I try to start everyday with praise.  I want to prepare and expectation for God doing good things and opening my eyes to what God is about to do.  I hope we can all remember Isaiah's words today.   Just a thought for today!
