Missions and Service

One way Ashland United Methodist Church "Celebrating Life Together" is through Risk-Taking Missions and Service. We do all we can to help folks discover and use their gifts, talents and interests to be in ministry to our neighbors, both in St. Joseph, the surrounding communities, and worldwide.

To help folks discover their special God-given gifts we regularly offer the class "Serve From the Heart" where participants learn about and define their spiritual gifts. There are ample opportunities to put one's gifts to use; we'd be excited to help you plug into a ministry area where you can serve passionately and purposefully.

Our Risk-Taking Mission Team oversees a number of service offerings throughout the year: Watch the calendar for the annual Basket Auction supporting our ministries near home and missionaries abroad. Also watch for initiatives such as the kids school supplies drive (with the Salvation Army), regular Red Cross blood drives, Crop Walk, Festival of Sharing, Operation Christmas Child, Compassion International sponsor a child drives, Faith in Action volunteer care teams etc.

Our Overseas Mission Support:

Ashland prayerfully and financially supports three overseas missions: Missouri native Helen Sheperd is a United Methodist missionary living in Mongolia. Helen works closely with underserved rural folks who are sick and dying, overseeing a hospice house as well as helping to lead a growing church. Construction on the hospice was just completed in early 2009 to the glory of God.

Ashland also has a covenant relationship with a sister church in Goxane Mozambique (eastern coast of Africa). Our support provides the salary and some insurance for our local pastor there  (more information available at www.moumethodist.org). Some pictures of our sisters and brothers can be see here. Our friends sent us a letter in January 2009 which can be read here.

We also provide financial support for church planters Petar and Heidi Zunic, who are living the gospel with a small community of Christians in Split, Croatia.

Equally important to Ashland is serving and making a difference in our community, we support such programs and institutions such as:

  • Habitat for Humanity
  • Open Door Food Kitchen
  • Inter-Serv Mobile Meals
  • Inter-Serv's Calvin Center Food Pantry, RSVP Program, and Mobile Meals
  • Faith in Action of St. Joseph

And we support these Christian institutions just outside of St. Joseph:
